Riggler’s Sign

A lateral decubitus film (usually right side up) can be of use if an erect film cannot be obtained for the diagnosis of viscus perforation. Air will then outline the lateral edge of the liver. When there is free air within the abdomen, the bowel becomes clearly delineated due to the presence of air on both sides of the bowel wall. This is termed Riggler’s sign.
